You will normally need a roof rack (horizontal bars running across the car) to carry your canoe, kayak or sit on top on your car. Use some strong webbing straps with buckles to secure the canoe to the roofrack.
'Uprights' and 'J Bars' are ideal for helping transport kayaks, especially if you have more than one.
